What Sundays Are For

Sundays are always bittersweet. They’re a free day to use as you please but the thought of Monday looms as the hours tick away.

To feel like I’m making the most of a day that’s all mine, here are five ways I like to spend my Sundays.

1. Sleeping In


Five days of the week, I wake up with a radio alarm and one on my phone for backup. While some people religiously get up at the same time every day of the week, I turn off the alarms and let my body rest as long as it needs in order to catch up on the sleep debt that may have accrued during the week. That way, I’m caught up and refreshed going into the new week (as long as I go to bed at a reasonable time).

2. Cleaning


OK, so cleaning isn’t exactly my favourite activity but there’s nothing better than a living space that’s neat and tidy. During the week, clutter accumulates throughout my apartment so I make it a point to start the week with a mess-free space. It’s also a good day to tackle a mountain of laundry so there are no mid-week sock shortages.

3. Being Productive


While you may have free evenings during the week, your brain can get decision fatigue, which means by the time you get home from work, your brain isn’t going to be as productive as when it’s fresh. Without a full day of decision-making behind you, you have the mental and physical energy to accomplish something you were putting off during the week, whether it’s working out, organizing your closet, reading or writing a blog post (like this one!)

4. Reflecting


The hustle of a weekday can consume your thoughts, making your vision a bit short-sighted when it comes contemplating long-term goals. When you’ve had a couple work-free days, it’s easier to reflect on things that really matter: relationships, career goals, picking up new activities or volunteering, side jobs or travel. Then, when the week starts with those goals under your belt, it’s easier to take baby steps towards achieving them.

5. Relaxing


Last but not least, Sundays are for relaxing. Once you’ve taken care of everything you wanted to accomplish, it’s time to take care of yourself. For me, the best way to wrap up the weekend is with some downtime on the couch with a glass of wine and some TV so when it’s time for bed, I feel relaxed and ready to tackle the new week.
